A unique castle overlooking the magnificent Loire Valley.

Château Haute Roche was built in 1847 and was acquired in 1947 by His Excellency Claude Achille Clarac, a diplomat and ambassador of France, husband of the photographer, journalist, and writer Anne Marie Schwarzenbach. During his stays at Haute Roche, Claude Achille Clarac expanded the building with an eastern extension, built a terrace, and designed the garden.

The garden is designed to create different atmospheres, from the classic French garden to the Japanese-inspired part, passing through the rock garden. Passionate and knowledgeable, his adopted son, Henri Pagau Clarac, continued his father's work and contributed to making it an exceptional garden.

Many personalities have stayed at Haute Roche. His Excellency Claude Achille Clarac and his son breathed life into it, and we take on the task with great humility, hoping to live up to it.It is said that the beauty of a place is not so much linked to the location as to the people who stay there. We wish you a pleasant stay.

About us

The story of our guest room begins long before its creation, as we had been planning this project for many years and drew inspiration largely from our own life experiences abroad and travels.

From my childhood in the countryside of southern Sweden, I wanted to preserve the proximity and respect for nature to which we belong.

My professional life then took me to Los Angeles in California, Copenhagen in Denmark, and then to Paris and Nantes, where I have been residing for over 30 years.

Haute Roche became clear to us from the first visit. We fell in love with Château Haute Roche, were captivated by its history, and won over by the view of the valley.

The initial idea is to offer you what we appreciate during our travels, whether it's an exceptional location, cuisine, or comfort.

A privileged tourist experience at Château Haute Roche

The morning mist slowly dissipates from the valley, revealing a hot air balloon making its appearance with powerful bursts of hot air. You may also have the opportunity to observe deer grazing below in the garden. Pheasants, hares, and wild boars have also made their home with us. Feel free to take a stroll around the estate and discover your own secret spot.

Enjoy a drink on the terrace before dinner at our guest table and catch a glimpse of the illuminated Oudon keep in the evening between the Austrian pines.
